Protect Your Gum Health
with Periodontal Therapy
Did you know that periodontal disease (more commonly known as gum disease) is actually the leading cause of adult tooth loss here in the United States? This infection is no joke, and our Yakima team takes it very seriously during your regular checkups and cleanings. We will always screen for tell-tale symptoms (such as oral bleeding and swollen, red gum tissue) in our patients and recommend treatment as soon as possible if we discover anything concerning. Our goal is to protect not just your smile, but your overall wellbeing from harm!
Please contact Terrace Heights Dental Center today if you have any questions, or if you’re ready to schedule your first appointment with Dr. Bonny.
Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and root planing can essentially be thought of as an in-depth cleaning that targets areas of the mouth that are normally left alone during a typical hygiene appointment. Our team’s goal is to eliminate infectious bacteria in two stages. First, during the “scaling” portion, we will clean around and underneath the gum tissue. Then, during the “root planing” portion, the rough tooth root surfaces (which are prime areas for plaque accumulation) will be thoroughly smoothed so as to prevent further flare-ups in the future.
Antibiotic Therapy
Antibiotic therapy is typically paired with scaling and root planing in order to maximize the effectiveness of the procedure. Our team will apply the medication directly to the gum tissue so that it can eliminate any bacterial deposits left behind. This technique can have positive effects on your oral health for several days after application and may even reduce the size of the periodontal pockets even further.
